Decision Making, How to Master Procrastination

Welcome back to Imagine Money, a short daily lesson to help us all think better so we can live better. This week we're reading the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.

Last time we discussed persistence, today we are looking at Decision - The Mastery of Procrastination.

Decision-making is essential skill leaders and successful people have in common. Some of us are quick to make decisions, while others have a hard time making even the most minor decisions.

Hill wrote: "Procrastination, the opposite of decision, is a common enemy which practically everyone must conquer."

When analyzing wealthy, successful people, each one had the habit of making quick decisions.

Hill describes wealthy industrialist Henry Ford's most outstanding quality: making decisions quickly and changing them slowly. The quality was so prominent in the way he worked that he earned the reputation of being obstinate. That quality had him continue to manufacture the Model T car when his advisors urged him to change it. He may have taken his time deciding, but it earned him a vast fortune.

Most people are slow to make decisions and listen to other's opinions a little too often. So keep your own counsel and reach your conclusions. One way is by listening more and talking less. And only share your goals with your Mastermind group whom you have chosen well.

We all have certain people in our lives who are quick to tell us that we cannot; Your plan will not work. Your idea is not good. Your product or service will not succeed. You are not good enough, or how dare you think you can do what I couldn't. And so on and so on.

Stay away from naysayers, even if it means not discussing your goals with "well-meaning" family members or friends. Instead, use your mastermind group to bounce ideas, discuss actions, get advice, and celebrate successes. Discuss goals with the experts in your field and those who believe in you and want you to succeed.

"The most difficult thing is the decision to act; the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure, the process is its reward." - Amelia Earhart.

How do we get better at making decisions? Practice!

  • Begin by making small decisions quickly, and don't question them.

  • Look at the challenge you are facing and write down possible responses.

  • Evaluate it. Pros and cons lists help.

  • Get feedback from your mastermind group.

  • Select an option, implement and assess in time.

  • Complement yourself for a quick decision!

That's all for today. Until next time, keep imagining what's possible.
